10 Tips for Your First Gorilla Trek in Rwanda

Trekking to see mountain gorillas is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences on Earth. Here's how to make your first time unforgettable.

1. Book Your Permit Early

Rwanda issues a limited number of gorilla trekking permits each day. Book at least 3–6 months in advance, especially during peak season (June–September and December–February).

2. Arrive a Day Early

Treks start early in the morning from Kinigi. Arriving the day before means you're rested, acclimatized, and ready. This is where staying at a nearby lodge matters.

3. Train Your Legs

Treks can last 2–6 hours depending on where the gorilla family is. The terrain is steep, muddy, and at altitude (2,500–3,000m). A few weeks of walking or hiking before your trip helps enormously.

4. Wear the Right Gear

Long trousers, gardening gloves, waterproof hiking boots, and a light rain jacket are essential. The forest is wet, and nettles are everywhere.

5. Hire a Porter

Porters carry your bag and often help you up steep sections. It's a small cost that supports local communities and makes your trek far easier.

6. Keep Your Distance

You'll be asked to stay at least 7 meters from the gorillas. Follow your guide's instructions — they know the family's behavior and keep everyone safe.

7. No Flash Photography

Flash can disturb the gorillas. Use natural light, keep your camera ready, and put your phone on silent.

8. Watch Your Health

Gorillas share 98% of our DNA, so human illness can be dangerous to them. If you're sick, you may not be allowed to trek — and it's the right call for their protection.

9. Bring Cash for Tips

Tips for guides, trackers, and porters are customary and appreciated. Bring small USD or RWF notes.

10. Pair It With Lake Kivu

After the intensity of the trek, give yourself a day or two to rest on Lake Kivu. B&P Ever Retreat Villa is the perfect place to unwind, with a private beach, infinity pool, gardens and calm lake views. Our 4-day trek and Lake Kivu itinerary shows how to fit it in, and if you want more wildlife, add a Big Five safari in Akagera.
